Former co-stars of Danny Boyle's hugely successful Slumdog Millionaire, Freida Pinto and Dev Patel, have parted ways after six years together as a happy couple, US Weekly reported.

A source told the magazine: "Dev and Freida have broken up. They have been done for a while."

Apparently, the two stars quietly decided to part ways a while ago, as far back as October.

The source added: “Freida is single and happy. Friends are setting her up."

The A-lister turned 30 in October and Patel was not part of the celebration. The Trishna actress was instead spotted with actor Siddharth Mallya.

The couple's split seems to have come out of the blue as not so long ago, Pinto refuted rumours about there being trouble in paradise and maintained that they are still together and that Patel is her soulmate and will continue to be.

When Vogue India called their spokesperson, she neither confirmed or denied the news, saying: "The two have never commented on their personal lives and will continue to do so in the future."

Before dating her co-star, Pinto was engaged to her former publicist, Rohan Antao. They called it off in January 2009.

Pinto's Desert Dancer is set to hit screens in April whereas Patel's HBO series The Newsroom, which has seen his character on the run this season after getting caught up in a leak of government secrets, has its series finale on Sunday, December 14.

Shocked fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the duo's breakup:
