PESHAWAR: PA resolution criticized

Published September 12, 2003

PESHAWAR, Sept 11: The Joint Action Committee has condemned the resolution passed by the NWFP Assembly through which the recommendations of the National Commission on the Status of Women have been rejected.

The NCSW, in its recommendations, had called for repealing the Hudood Ordinance. JAC regretted that the resolution, passed with majority, had termed those recommendations a conspiracy against Islam. In a press release on Thursday, JAC said the members who had adopted the resolution were unaware of the pros and cons of the Hudood Ordinance.

JAC, an organization of civil society groups, asked the MPAs to understand the NCSW’s report before making a decision on it.—Correspondent
