PESHAWAR, Sept 9: University of Peshawar lacks financial resources to construct a staff colony though land for the purpose has been earmarked on the campus for quite some time, officials say.

“We have a plan to construct residential colonies for the staff, but the university can’t generate funds for the project from its own resources,” Vice-Chancellor Zulfiqar Hussain Gillani said.

He pointed out that the university had submitted a plan to the Higher Education Commission long ago and sought funds for the purpose. He said three sites had been specified for the proposed housing schemes and added that PC-1 of those schemes had been approved.

Sources said the university provided Rs6 million annually to its staff as house rent. These expenses can be reduced if the colony is made.

Accommodation problem has become a chronic issue and an employee has to wait for more than 15 years to find a residence on the campus. The induction of Engineering University and Khyber Medical College into the campus has complicated the issue.

Members of the university teaching staff association criticized the management for its alleged indifferent attitude.
