First I feel sorry for all such kids and I am surprised. India need to focus on educating and teaching their TEACHERS rather spending billions on space technology. This surely has a lot to do with the governtment style and priorities.
You gain power with the power of strong beliefs and good manners, not just through technology. Technology alone has detoriated western powers, you can imagine!
May God show them right path, ameen.

@Fahim I endlessly surprised by Pakistanis' reactions?
The Islamic Republic of Pakistan has Malala Yusufazai Aisa Bibi Rimsha Masih to it's credit,,,and yet,you feel that you can pass judgements like these?:)
It must be ACKNOWLEDGED and then,tackled..which,precisely is what India is trying to do?
Close down the madarasas and the "teachers" who breed terrorists?:)

The first step to solve any problem is by accepting the problem and I'm glad this is what these people are exactly doing. It is commendable to raise this issue in public and educating children regarding the dangers of child abuse in our society. It is with our shared efforts that we'll make this place better one day... Here is the best part. No child abuse happens in Pakistan, because 100% of the Pakistanis are good to each other and to the children. Only in bad places like India, you need rallies to awaken people. Why is India spending money on mission to Mars is beyond me. The fact that people need to arrange rallies against corruption, against rape, against child abuse is a great indication on how sick the Indian society is. May be they should have quietly hushed it under the rug so that the world doesn't see their dirty laundry. Indians should learn from just and moral societies like Pakistan.

@ROHIT PANDEY The point is , all those "endless Pakistanis" are surprised at the fact that India you Indians claim to be the most civilized nation in the world should have such horrifying statistics . Pakistan , as per you Indians , is a big cave , so how come the most advanced nation on earth is worse than a cave ? Don't compare your "superior" selves to us poor Pakistanis . Show where you stand as compared to other civilized nations .Finally, show some maturity and learn to accept tolerance without resorting to shallow taunts .

@shahid child abuse happens in every culture and country but 53 percent is very alarming. Only a small percentage in populous India is thriving but rest of janta is suffering. Rape cases, farmers committing suicide, slums, poverty, etc and list goes on and on. West went to moon after their people were taken care of but countries like Russia and now India are spending more on technology than on food and education. I am not going to elaborate on what Pakistani military is getting at expense of its people because I know there are enough Indians here on Dawn forum to comment against Pakistan.

First of all I do not know why "Dawn" is so attached to school children in "Hyderabad" on "some" report of 53%. Anybody can report 'a report' and can twist things their own way. In Pakistan, reports are serious business. Anybody reports anything against establishment is "eliminated", forget about religion. In India mostly it's anybody's business. One can't demand respect but to earn it.

@VINOD we were one subcontinent with different nations on it, and we are the same sub continent but with more independent of British empire rule. Other than that nothing in common, except Mughal food, that too to your North. But in Pakistan, Islamic principle make us cherish children , not abuse them. Undoubtedly there will be violators but minuscule compared to India, which is no place for women, children , minorities and the low caste.

Its time that we Pakistani's also appreciate the universal message given by Malala and her father and protect children in Pakistan as well. With such powerful role models, why don't our countrymen stand up for change instead of disowning Malala?

@Fuknabi: That number is wrong.. The official literacy rate of India is 74.04 as per 2010-11 census. Considering that there has been a 2% increase in the last 3 years, I wanna say the Indian Muslim's literacy rate is around 60%.. The reason why there is greater illiteracy amongst Muslims is due to larger families & female illiteracy.. I am not saying these are good things, but they are our own people.. Don't embarrass us sensible Indians here.
Plus this topic is on Child sex abuse.. This is somethings we should be all ashamed of from the bottom of our hearts... Hopefully the new laws enacted in 2012 will bring some speedy justice..

I too feel sorry for the kids but my dear Pakistanis if you know the Indian population you should have commented wisely. These incidents are one in million cases. In Pakistan these incidents will be there but no one will dare to come out with fear. Conservative families, so either they will be killed or sold to the Arabs for their pleasure. Children are innocent and they should be protected, but as parents can never always be with them, these incidents takes place.
Also many cases were during the previous government regime and as the new government is ought to bring major changes those who were afraid are now coming out and speaking. India will change for the positive you need to give some time. Just Wait and Watch.

Indians are so fortunate that they can voice their protest against a social injustice in a democratic manner, and that is taken cognizance of by the Indian society. Unfortunately, you cant protest in Pakistan against social evil, be it dowry killing, female infanticide/illiteracy, women's subjugation, to name only a few. Please try to understand that India and Pakistan are having common cultural background. We all must try to eradicate these social outrage, barbarity against humanity, atrocities against women. If similar protest erupts through out Pakistan, it will be beneficial to all the countries of Indian Sub Continent. Do not forget Pakistan is the place where once 'Taksasila' existed. Try to revive it. Try to spread the vibe of enlightenment from this seat of learning. Pointing fingers against one another is of no use.

neither Pakistanis are devils nor Indians are saints !
Desperate have no single country, they are existing beyond borders, if any country takes a step forward, rest should follow and motivate the one who takes the initiative ... this leg pulling will bring nothing for the peace and prosperity in South Asia.
Rather than being productive, at this forum of Dawn, mostly I see Indians and Pakistanis blaming each other, is there any end to this verbal war ?
for how long we will be fighting with each other and waste our time, resources for a useless and unproductive war ?
why cant we talk about feeding our hungry and educating our illiterate ?
