Govt finalises JIT to probe Model Town killings

LAHORE: The government on Tuesday finalised the formation of a five-member joint investigation team (JIT) to probe the killings of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) workers on June 17, DawnNews reported.

The JIT will start investigations from Wednesday.

The investigation team will be led by CCPO Quetta Abdul Razzaq Cheema and will also comprise Col Ahmed from Inter Service Intelligence (ISI), Muhammad Ali from Intelligence Bureau (IB), SSP Shahzad Akbar and DSP Khalid Abu Bakar.

The PAT has rejected the probe, saying that Abdul Razzaq Cheema has personal relations with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and would not be impartial.

PAT chief Dr Tahirul Qadri on Friday rejected the probe, saying that he refused to accept any JIT either formed under the Punjab police or without the resignation of Shahbaz Sharif.

The five-member JIT, was notified by the Punjab government on Thursday about two and-a-half months after a sessions court ordered registration of a fresh First Information Report (FIR) on a complaint of the PAT.

Fourteen people had been killed and scores others injured in the June 17 clash between police and PAT workers.

The PAT later registered a FIR against 21 people, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif.

The killing led to anti-government protests led by PAT chief Tahirul Qadri who also staged a two month long sit-in in Islamabad.

Whats the point in setting up a JIT which the injured party has rejected because it includes SS's close appointees, which totally undermines its moral authority. Furthermore, what happened to the first report? Did not like the conclusion? Sharifs will keep on setting up committees and commissions until they get the result they want. Otherwise, they love following the law:)

Razak Cheema has been serving in Quetta for last one year, he is honest and upright officer. He fought terrorist in Quetta from the front. In his tenure terrorist were on the run for first time. H eserved with grace and honour in Sindh. He is an opright police officer with few years serve in Punjab. Please in your war dont try to tarnish upright honest offiers

@zafar syed and ZAHID : This is a matter of killing innocent people and not a matter of politics. Following a Political Party does not mean following every of its decision blindly. If you support PML-N, do not support their killings of innocent people. Fourteen people have been killed by the Provincial Police and I am wondering no one has yet been brought the the court of law. Everyone knows the ex-law minister of Punjab was involved and the CM is trying hard to save him. Politicians are being blamed for the failure of this country but the common man of this country is more responsible for it. In fact, the blind support of parties has brought this country to the brink of failure.

The single judge judicial tribunal has long ago blamed Punjab government and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for Model Town massacre of June 16/17. Punjab government did not make the tribunal’s report public as yet; instead JIT has been formed by the accused. Justice is no where near.

What should be done by this commission???? It’s just a wastage of funds and time. Govt. should support the deceased’s families. Qadri sab as your concern is correct but let them go. Nothing should be changed. Think like a leader not competitor.
