KARACHI, Sept 8: The spillage from the broken vessel, Tasman Spirit, is the first incident of its kind in the world that has taken place very close to the densely populated area.

This was observed at a meeting of the Coordination Committee constituted on the directive of President Musharraf. The meeting was held here on Monday under the chairmanship of the chief secretary.

To counter the situation and repair the damage caused by the spillage, the meeting was told, the provincial government was continuously utilizing all its resources without any support and help from the owners of the ship or the concerned insurance company.

The government has already declared the area from the coast up to five nautical miles into the sea and the area from Lyari river end to Malir river end as ‘sanctuary’ and prohibited fishing due to pollution. The ban has been enforced effectively.—PPI
