GHALANAI: Six people were killed and four injured in two blasts aimed at members of a peace committee in Chinari village of Safi tehsil on Friday.

Local people told Dawn that unidentified men first targeted the son of a peace committee’s head. Musawar Khan, son of Malik Darya Khan, and a member of the committee were going to somewhere on a motorcycle when a roadside improvised explosive device hit them, leaving them both wounded.

Villagers gathered at the blast site and were taking the injured to a hospital when the second blast occurred, killing six people.

The assistant political agent in Ghalanai, Zeeshan Abdullah, said Musawar Khan and another activist of the committee were among the dead. Malik Darya Khan is an influential figure in the area and has been leading the peace committee for the past few years. In recent days militants have stepped up their activities in the area. They force people to return home before sunset.

Authorities have asked the area residents to remain vigilant and ensure that government installations are not attacked by militants.
