PCB chief unhappy with performance

ISLAMABAD, Sept 6: Pakistan team’s showing in the third Test against Bangladesh which they won by the skin of their teeth on Saturday was termed as disappointing by Lt. Gen Tauqir Zia.

Tauqir, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, told reporters at the Rawalpindi Stadium that even a club side could have fared better.

Although Pakistan clinched the three Test series 3-0, Tauqir was not impressed with what happened in Multan. “Although the bowlers did well, it were the batsmen who did not do what was expected of them,” said the general who retires from the Army this month.

“Saqlain Mushtaq was not up to the mark, however Umer Gul and Shabbir Ahmed held the attack together in the absence of Shoaib Akhtar and Muhammad Sami.”

Speaking about preparing good pitches, he said it was the responsibility of the home team captain and the coach. “They should direct the groundsmen accordingly after analysing the batting and bowling strengths of the rivals.”

Pakistan won the Multan Test by one wicket but not before conceding a big first innings lead to a side that came looking for its first Test victory.
