GUJRANWALA, Sept 5: The women councillors, 138 in number out of total 488, will play a decisive role in the election of Kamoki tehsil Nazim.
Under the Local Government Ordinance, a candidate will have to get at least 51 per cent votes for winning the tehsil Nazim slot.
According to a survey, the number of voters in 24 union councils of Kamoki tehsil is 504. However, the number is restricted to 488 as some UC members have gone abroad for livelihood and some have gone to tehsil council while a Naib Nazim died a few months ago.
The Jamaat-i-Islami on Thursday night announced boycotting the election, saying that it was a contest between two groups of the ruling party and both were the axis of evil.
JI district president Allama Obaidul Rehman Madni claimed that his party, however, had the support of at least 10 members of union councils.
Aspirants are facing problems in winning the favour of women councillors because they are demanding funds and other facilities for the completion of uplift projects. But the aspirants are assuring them that uplift projects in their areas would be got completed after winning the election.
POLLING STATION: The district returning officer on Friday ordered changing of the polling station for the election of Kamoki tehsil Nazim’s slot.
The returning officer also directed the district administration and police to ensure strict security measures at the polling station to avoid any untoward incident.
Some aspirants had lodged a complain with the DRO/DSJ Riazul Hassan Alvi that the sole polling station was set up in the Government High School, Kamoki, which was adjacent to the house of provincial transport minister Chaudhry Shamshad Ahmad. They said the ruling party, PML-Q, had nominated his brother Sajjad Ahmad to contest the election.
They expressed their apprehension that the minister and his supporters, including the acting Tehsil Nazim and Naib Nazim, would easily involve themselves in the pre-poll rigging by harassing the voters.
Giving his decision, the DSJ ordered that the polling station should be set up in the tehsil office. District administration officials and DPO Saud Aziz visited the tehsil office and took solid steps for maintaining law and order during polling on Sept 8.
