Ahmed, Iman bag Subh-e-Nau titles

ISLAMABAD: Ahmed Chaudhry and Iman Qureshi won the finals of men’s and women’s singles event respectively at the NBP Subh-e-Nau national tennis championship on Saturday.

Iman from Lahore overcame Rida Khalid 6-1, 6-3 after an entertaining contest at the PTF Complex.

She won the second national ladies singles title in two weeks having earlier won the Tajamul Abbas Memorial National tennis championship last week after beating the same opponent.

Ahmed trounced Imran Shaukat 6-2, 6-1 in a one-sided contest to win his first title.

Pair of Aqeel Khan and Shehzad Khan won the men’s doubles title by overpowering M. Abid and Usman Rafique 6-2, 6-7(2), 10-8.

Talha Zubair won the boys’ U-18 title by beating M. Muzammil 6-3, 6-2.

A total of Rs270,000 were disbursed among players as prize money in accordance with ITF rules.

For the first time in the history of Pakistan tennis, both men and women players were awarded with equal prize money.

Both men’s and ladies’ singles winners bagged Rs35,000 each as prize money while the runner-up players pocketed Rs20,000 each.
