KARACHI: Further spill of oil reported

Published September 5, 2003

KARACHI, Sept 4: Contrary to official claims, residents of Clifton and Seaview areas on Thursday reported further spill of oil from Tasman Spirit.

They said the unbearably pungent air in the afternoon on Thursday indicated that oil continued to leak from the ship.

A high KPT official did not confirm the spill, but said that salvagers were carrying out their operation and possibility of a small spill during the operation could not be ruled out.

Maritime sources said the salvagers were busy clearing the bunkers of the grounded ship and drawing the leftover cargo oil, and the fresh spill, which could be quantified around 900-1000 tonnes, could be attributed to the process.

The sources said foreign experts also made an aerial survey following reports of the spill and maintained that patches of oil existed. They added that no aerial spray of chemical on the see was witnessed.
