There was no issue of Dawn on Oct 17, 1964, on account of the death anniversary of Liaquat Ali Khan. The following is an excerpt from the previous day’s edition.

TOKYO: On a day of upsets Pakistan were restricted to a solitary-goal victory by Britain in the Olympic Hockey Tournament at Komozala Park here this morning [Oct 15]. Hammered by Australia 7-0 earlier in the series, Britain conceded the only goal to the defending champions, in the 51st minute of play through a penalty corner taken by right-back Munir Dar. Pakistan’s strategy and skill were more pronounced but the forwards could not strike their form. Full-backs Atif and Munir Dar were good but never brilliant. The outstanding performer was right-half Saeed Anwar. Britons fought tenaciously and once they had held Pakistan’s early attacks they settled down and provided Pakistan with some anxious moments.

Pakistan started promisingly. The Olympic champions forced a penalty corner in the first minute and four minutes later winger Khurshid Azam sent a cross which Motiullah took well and passed to spearhead Niazi, whose attempt was saved by the goal-keeper. Britain retaliated and earned a corner in the seventh minute but without result.
