KARACHI: Intelligence agencies on Thursday claimed to have arrested the mastermind of the attempt to free around 100 militants from the Karachi Central Prison, DawnNews reported.

The suspect was arrested from Karachi’s Mehmoodabad area on a tip-off while intelligence sources also claimed to have recovered two snatched government-issued SMG guns from the arrested man.

Sources further said that the recovered SMG were stolen after the targeted killing of two policemen in Quaidabad area of Karachi and added that the suspect arrested was the purchaser of the house used in the foiled jailbreak attempt.

Sources said that the mastermind had laid the foundation for the tunnel being dug to rescue their jailed comrades.

He is said to be associated to a banned outfit and the right-hand man of a renowned terrorist Attaur Rehman aka Naeem Bokhari.

On the other hand East Zone police claimed the arrest of the former owner of the house which was used in the bid to free prisoners from jail. Police officials added that the arrested man was a key-figure in the jail break plot.

The suspect's name had also appeared in a copy of an electricity bill showed to the media by security personnel.

Pakistan Rangers raided a house near Karachi’s central prison which was used by suspects to tunnel their way to their targeted barrack, an officer of the paramilitary force had revealed on Monday.
