Errant Afghan Taliban tweet shows spokesman's location as Pakistan

KABUL: An apparently errant tweet by the Taliban's spokesman in Afghanistan gave his location as being in Pakistan.
On Friday, a tweet by Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claiming an attack included geolocation information that suggested he sent the message from Sindh, Pakistan.
Mujahid later sent a tweet Saturday describing the location leak as an “enemy plot”.
He also offered his Afghan telephone number to confirm his identity and wrote: “With full confidence, I can say that I am in my own country.”
Twitter says such geolocation data is based on latitude and longitude data or other information provided by users at the time of their message.
In an explanation of geolocation, Twitter itself warns: “Remember, once you post something online, it's out there for others to see”

Very Well - Get Twitter to release the Smart ID of the device, they CAN trace it. There is no hiding if smart ID is captured, it can tell the device name, where it was obtained from and lead to the target.

The Government must take action against the Afghan Taliban.

DAWN, you do understand that it's fairly easy to mask/change your location on the internet right? Basides, NSA sees all anyway, so unless the Afghan Taliban spokesman wants to be droned within a few minutes, he's probably going out of his way to anonymize his connection to the internet.

I am in China. I use a proxy server to use twitter. Sometimes, it shows I am in the US. At others, in Canada.
However, it is more likely this guy is in Pakistan considering our establishment's love for them. We haven't forgotten 'OBL in Abbotabad' yet. Our 'boys' like to play this game.

For one thing its stupid to think that because he twitted from Karachi, Its HE and HE only. Anyone can login from anywhere thru any ID he has access to. Regarding OBL, please note that he was on the run and was hiding in Abbotabad and was not the Country's president like Naridar Mudi. In Pakistan religious parties especially orthodox ones hardly make headlights in elections. In India they control central and provincial govts!! Its only in India where mass killers go the top slot.

The indian geniuses here apparently don't know what a proxy server is. It could have said he's in Papua New Guinea. Does it mean he's physically there? I can't believe IT companies would outsource to indian when the latter are so clueless about basic things. Indian make good chai walas only

Proxy server or physical presence, does it matter? The fact that a reputed site used by millions and terrorists to convey had a location stamp, that too of Pakistan of all places in the world! To top all this, it is reported in a respected daily as well. Question is will the government/ISPR/FO going to comment on this or sweep it under the carpet.

Such tracking locations can be manipulated and easily masked when the Twitter account IP address is bounced many times over. Who knows, it could very well be that this fake Jihadi is actually sending tweets from some hole in the ground.... just like so many fake so called Islamic terrorist sites which have been traced to non Muslim entities.

@Huma your own government has said that it will support the elected Afghan government and also that it is a non Nato ally of US for the war of terror against Taliban and Al Qaeda. It also supported the BSA between Afghanistan and USA. So then not justfor USA but for Pakistan also, these people should be your enemies.

@Sonny Afridi if he wanted to mislead people aout where he is, he could use a proxy server and claim to be in Karachi when he is in fact in Afghanistan. Since it was not his intent to claim to be in Karachi, then it only means he must actually be there and did not realize location is disclosed when he tweets.
