ISLAMABAD, Aug 30: People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP) Senator Rukhsana Zuberi has appealed to the Commonwealth secretary-general Donald Mckennon to take notice of the corrupt practices of the ministers of the Musharraf regime that was worsening the overall situation in the country.

In a letter addressed to the Commonwealth secretary-general, explaining the helplessness of prime minister Zafarullah Jamali, Ms Zuberi said: “The prime minister presided over a cabinet where civil servants refused to take directions from the cabinet ministers as disclosed by himself to General Musharraf. The prime minister also told the president that he was worried about corrupt practices of the sitting cabinet ministers Awais Leghari, Liaqat Jatoi, Abdul Sattar Lalika, Nourez Shakoor and Faisal Saleh Hayat.”

Mentioning a report in the media on the corruption of Musharraf government, she said: “According to the report, horse- trading was rampant. A senator from the Frontier had offered his services for purchase of loyalties of a dozen parliamentarians for the self-declared president.”

She said the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) took no notice of the corruption of the ministers or purchase of loyalties of the parliamentarians in the Senate elections. Those who hope that the judiciary would take notice of the rampant corruption had their hopes dashed, as it was difficult for the judiciary to act independently in a country where a military ruler was trampling the constitution, she added.
