Hawks, Rams, Wolves, Stags win openers

KARACHI: Hyderabad Hawks, Faisalabad Wolves, Rawalpindi Rams and Bahawalpur Stags emerged as the first-round winners in the PCB Inter-Region Under-19 Cricket Tournament on Tuesday.

The Hawks, who had conceded a 20-run lead on the first innings, bounced back to defeat Dera Murad Jamali Ibexes by seven wickets on the final day of the three-day Pool ‘A’ fixture at the Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad.

Faiz Hussain was the Hawks’ star performer in their pursuit of the 195-run chase. Faiz, who also was the top-scorer in the first innings, hammered a scintillating 108 from 129 deliveries with the aid of 15 boundaries. All-rounder Daniyal Rajput remained unbeaten with an 85-ball 55 (seven fours) after taking eight wickets in the game.

The Pool ‘A’ tie was drawn at the NBP Sports Complex here n Karachi with Karachi Dolphins taking first-innings’ points against Larkana Bulls.

The Wolves opened their Pool ‘B’ campaign by inflicting an innings and nine-run defeat upon Abbottabad Falcons at the Sports Stadium in Sargodha.

The Falcons, who were 54-1 after being forced to follow on, mustered 178 all out in their second innings despite a defiant 106 (238 balls, 17 boundaries) from the bat of Mohammad Zohaib.

Islamabad Leopards a slim lead of four runs on first innings after totalling 211 against Fata Cheetahs in the drawn Pool ‘B’ match at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad.

The Rams trounced Karachi Zebras by an innings and 19 runs in their Pool ‘C’ meeting at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi.

The Zebras, who were 7-0 after following on at draw of stumps on Monday, were dismissed for 150 with Saad Alam making a 72-ball 50. Mohammad Ismail and Awais Iqbal captured three wickets each.

In the same group the Stags sealed a 123-run victory over Multan Tigers at the Dring Stadium in Bahawalpur after both outfits suffered inexplicable batting collapses in their second innings.

The Stags, who resumed at 59-3, were shot out for 97 in 66.2 overs with Abdul Quddoos returning magnificent analysis of eight for 41.

The Tigers, chasing 203, were then bowled out for 79 inside 40 overs. Mohammad Naeem claimed four for 23 to finish with match haul of eight for 81.

Meanwhile, both the Pool ‘D’ matches abandoned after there was no play for the second day running because of rain and wet conditions.
