HYDERABAD, July 22: The situation took a violent return in Latifabad union council-10 on Tuesday when its residents ransacked the Wasa executive engineer’s office and burnt tyres on Auto Bhan Road.

They were protesting against the failure of the civic agency to drain out rain water accumulated in their area since July 6.

Earlier, the residents, including a large number of women, gathered at the office of UC-10 to meet its Nazim, Mohammad Yousuf Qureshi.

They told the Nazim that poor sanitary condition prevailed in the area following rains of July 6 but the sanitary workers had taken no step to improve the situation.

Then the residents went to the office of the Wasa executive engineer, Latifabad, where he and his assistant were not present.

The irritated crowd ransacked the office of the executive engineer, damaging furniture and smashing windowpanes.

Later, the residents converged on the Auto Bhan Road and blocked the vehicular traffic by burning tyres, raising slogans against Wasa for its failure to drain out rain water from the area.

Latifabad Taluka Nazim Abdul Jabbar Khan arrived there with Iqbal Hussain, councillor of the UC-3. Mr Hussain was hit by a stone thrown by one of the protesters and received minor injury.

Mr Khan undertook before the protesters that he would see that water was drained from the area.

He called on the HDA director-general and the Wasa managing director. He took a round of the UC-10, identified the spots from where rain water was to be drained out and directed the officials to ensure that the area was cleaned without any further delay.
