OVIEDO (Spain), July 20: Amelie Mauresmo clinched the decisive third point on Sunday as France completed a 4-1 victory over Spain in their Fed Cup World Group quarterfinal.

Mauresmo beat Magui Serna 7-5, 6-2 to give France an unassailable 3-0 lead and set up a semifinal with Russia.

Stephanie Cohen-Aloro made it 4-0 thanks to a comfortable 6-3, 6-4 win over Maria Sanchez-Lorenzo before Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual combined to beat Nathalie Dechy and Emilie Loit 6-4, 6-4 and salvage some pride for the home side.

Straight-sets victories for Mauresmo and Nathalie Dechy had put France in command on the opening day but Serna briefly threatened a comeback for Spain on a cold Sunday morning.

With the tie won, Cohen-Aloro replaced Dechy for the fourth singles, racing into a 5-0 lead in the first set on her way to a simple win.—Reuters
