QUETTA: Former chief justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Friday hinted on the possibility of launching a movement from Quetta, if the democratic system in the country was derailed.

Addressing lawyers and judges at a function organised by members of the legal fraternity in his honor at Balochistan High Court, he said some elements were being used to overthrow the current democratic system.

"These elements would not succeed in undermining the democratic right of people," said the former chief justice.

He said the people of Balochistan always stood by democracy and the Constitution and they would do so in future as well.

Chaudhry stated that during previous government's five years tenure, conspiracies were repeatedly hatched.

"Some people hatched conspiracies to weaken the democracy during previous government," he said while referring to difficulties faced by PPP led government in Islamabad.

"It is loud and clear that governments cannot be overthrown through illegal means," said Chaudhry.

He hailed the struggle of lawyers for supremacy of constitution, parliament and democracy in the country.

"Had there been no lawyers movement, there would have been martial law in the country," he stated.

The former CJ reminded that lawyers were even burnt to death, tortured and imprisoned during their struggle for rule of law in the country.

He urged upon the present government to ensure law and order in the country and address grievances of the people on priority basis.

Lawyers' leader Baz Muhammad Kakar, Asif Reki Advocate, judges of Balochistan High Court and other senior lawyers participated in the function.
