Iftikhar Chaudhry sends Rs20 billion libel notice to Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: Lawyers of former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Thursday sent a defamation notice worth 20 billion rupees to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan.

Chaudhry’s lawyers while speaking to media representatives outside the Supreme Court said Imran Khan was attempting to disparage and malign the superior judiciary.

They added legal proceedings would be initiated against the PTI chief if he failed to apologise for the allegations he had leveled earlier against the former chief justice.

Earlier, sources said Chaudhry's legal team will initiate proceedings against the PTI supremo if the latter fails to prove the allegations he has been levelling against the former chief justice.

The PTI chief had accused the former chief justice of poll rigging in the 2013 general election.

Moreover, Chaudhry's son, Arsalan Iftikhar, had recently alleged that Imran did not fulfill the criterion set for being an elected representative of the people, as described in Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

Arsalan had said that there were doubts on Imran’s credibility to be elected as a parliamentarian.

Also recently, two lawyers had filed petitions against the PTI chief citing that the statements made by him maligned the former chief justice and other judges of the Supreme Court.

Why Imran Khan is becoming a blamer and lair only. He never gives proof and throw blames on the current Government just shorten their tenure. This will not help the country. If the present Government ousted before completion, they will come again. If they will be allowed to complete term and failed to perform, people will never let them come. Imran adopted similar strategy against them in 1998 and supported the army coup. The result is they are again in power with thumping majority. I just read comment by a PTI friend blaming recently retired Chief Judge Tussadaq Hussan that he was supporting PML-N to get some political appointment after retirement. Are all PTI people clean? no they are from the same boat ?

I can see a lot of PTI supporters hitting the ex-CJ below the belt. This guy has been responsible for protecting democracy in Pakistan by refusing to endorse Musharraf's illegitimate regime. For this he was dismissed, house arrested and his young children deprived from leaving home and even going to school. But for his principled sacrifices, we would still be serving Musharraf. Where will Imran Khan and PTI supporters be then? IK owes it to respect the former CJ. His followers must educate themselves and not call him by derogatory names. He can see more and better with his mind than PTI chief and supporters can see with both their eyes. They are blind.

I'm not from Pakistan so don't know what this judge was like in prosecuting corruption against all parties from a local level but from a high level view the facts are clear law and order and the Pakistani economy started heading downwards as soon as this judge gained influence and power in 2007 after his spat with Musharraf. Those who doubt this are free to go ahead and research it. This is a fact.

They should have advised him to say all the things he wanted to say by filing a case against Iftikhar Choudhary regarding rigging etc. Then he could have publicised all aspects of the case to his heart's content and there would have been absolutely no charge for defamation or libel against him. I do not know why PTI supporters are so worked up. The ex-CJP sends a libel notice to IK. The onus to prove it (i.e. the difficult part) is on the ex-CJP. If IK is innocent, he should be easily able to defend it in the court. The issue will be settled in a mature manner.

No one above the law don't involve the Institution. Corruption allegation is aginst you not aginst system. Don't fool the nation again by spreading wrong interpration of personal corruption allegation as allegation against the judiciry!!

I would only say one thing. We took suo moto notices every day trying to identify corrupt people and baseless decisions. It is sad though that he never confirmed to the Pakistani nation that he has eradicated the bribe culture from his judiciary department. If he did that, he would go down in history as THE person who completely eradicated bribery from judiciary. As of today, you only have to go down to any court and all will be revealed as to how corrupt our judiciary still is. If I was him, I would have taken all cases in the courts against every single politician and corrupt government officials and bring them to an end within 3 months. Of course, he had more important things to do. I also felt that he loved to be in the lime light as if he was a politician.

It is so sad to note that not only Imran Khan but whole PTI doesn't have the temperament. No respect for anyone. That shows their immaturity and total out of control behaviour. Few of the comments here are so disrespectful to a person who was considered and termed by PTI itself as the real change in Pakistan. A lot of PTI supporter was there to raise the slogans in favour of CJ and oust the Musharaf regime. And now such a disrespectful attitude! So much arrogance! Either they were wrong then or otherwise they are wrong now!. Stop wasting the time of a common Pakistani!

he had always been a part of PML-N and acted for his personal gains. He should be punished first, than his son and the whole nexus be shared with public, the illiterate lawyers who instead of pen, went on to streets and lost their credibility, only because of this vadera style Chaudhry.

Whatever happened to the allegation of paid overseas trips given to his son Arsalan Iftikhat by realestate magnate Riaz Malik. It seems this matter was hushed up and swept under the carpet. What happened to all the irregularities that were committed in promoting Dr. Arsalan into police ranks floundering all rules and regulations. The champion of Justice should first provide accountability of himself.

Go back to your retirement. You have annoyed everyone. You were not the best judge, you did not eradicate corruption in lower court where people's lives are miserable. You liked to get political mileage from everything which comes on your roster. Enough of this fame, and notoriety. The learned judge should know that defamation is the most difficult thing to prove in especially Pakistani courts. Now, once he come to the lower courts (and that is where his defamation should be heard as a court of first hearing), he would know how horrible they are--corrupt and inefficient. Also, it would be a permanent security issue. Now, would be more mud slinging. How for a change, the learned Choudhary adopt his former city (Quetta) as a change? Anything wrong with that?

The only partisan CJ in the history of Pakistan. He acted as proxy opposition for Mian Sahib by initiating flawed suo motos and controversial decisions which practically ground to halt the entire PPP tenure as Mian Sahib was apparently committed for posing friendly opposition.

I do not know the problem with PTI. If the allegations are true, then prove them simple!! If you cannot prove them then apologise for making up rumours. Imran khan is a joke! I lost respect for him when he changes and does u-turns. He use to laugh and ridicule sheikh rasheed now he is his best friend, Half the PTI team is full of ex PPP and PMN people. Tabdeeli?? @nazneen sheikh You forgot two things. One, he represents the largest political party in Pakistan, which is now treated as a mere blip by the political mafia. Two, discourse happens in open societies, not in one like ours where issues of utmost national interest are ignored, and the state is just a tool in the hands of a few.
