KARACHI: Lahore and Dacca will have television by October this year, while negotiations for Karachi are in progress. This was stated by the Central Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mr Abdul Waheed Khan, yesterday.

He told “Dawn” that the television in Lahore and Dacca, the two Provincial capitals, will be on an experimental basis for three months. If the experiment proves successful, this will be done on permanent lines.

A Japanese firm which has been given the work will bear the expenses during the experiment at Lahore and Dacca. The permanent contract will be given to it in case the experiment is a success, he said.

Mr Abdul Waheed Khan said that for Karachi negotiations were going on with various countries on the same terms and conditions as has been done in the case of Lahore and Dacca. Television will be started in Karachi as soon as these negotiations are completed and terms and conditions are finalised, he said.

The people of Karachi had already witnessed television which was temporarily installed during the Pakistan International Fair last year. Meanwhile, arrangements for introduction of television in both the Wings are being finalised.
