ISLAMABAD: Armed men attacked the office of an Ahle Sunnah wal Jamaat (ASWJ) leader in the capital city early Saturday, police said.

The incident took place at Rahmania Masjid, G-6, where ASWJ Islamabad chapter secretary general Maulana Abdul Rehman Muavia worked as the prayer leader.

ASWJ spokesman Hafiz Onaib Fraooqi told Dawn that at around 2:30am Maulana Muavia came to the mosque, parked his vehicle outside and went home.

Shortly afterwards, two motorcyclists reached the mosque and opened fire on the office after seeing the lights on. The office was badly damaged in the firing, he added.

It may be noted that an office-bearer and a khateeb affiliated with the ASWJ were shot dead in Rawalpindi on Thursday evening. The party said during the last about nine months its 13 workers had become victims of targeted killings.
