PESHAWAR, July 17: A juvenile court on Thursday handed over a juvenile offender to his mother on probation, directing her to provide him with proper education.

The court, presided over by district and sessions judge Hayat Ali Shah, directed the mother to produce the boy’s school documents before the court once in a month.

The boy, Zahid, resident of Shinkiari (Mansehra) was convicted by the court on July 3, 2002, and was sentenced to four years imprisonment. He had been sent to juvenile section of the Haripur prison as his family’s whereabouts were not known.

The boy was arrested by officials of Pishtakhara police station on Oct 24, 2001, and four kilograms of heroin was recovered from his possession. His trial was conducted by the district and sessions judge in his capacity as a juvenile court. Shahid was about 14 at the time of the crime’s occurrence.

His mother had come to know about the presence of her son in the prison’s a few days ago. She had filed an application before the court, stating that the boy had disappeared two years ago. She contended that he was an innocent boy and some body had trapped him for smuggling narcotics. She requested the court to release him on probation.
