Beijing to trim troops

BEIJING, July 16: China will begin trimming its 2.5 million-strong People’s Liberation Army (PLA) this month in an effort to make the world’s biggest army leaner and meaner, a Chinese military source and foreign analysts said on Wednesday.

The PLA will be cut by up to 500,000 men and officers over the next one to two years, the military source said, confirming a Reuters report last month.—Reuters
