PESHAWAR: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has named members of its provincial cabinet and decided to issue show cause notices to some senior leaders in the province for holding meetings without the permission of provincial president Khanzada Khan.

The names of the provincial office-bearers were announced by PPP provincial president after making consultation with central leadership of the party, particularly Faryal Talpur and Asif Ali Zardari.

The new office-bearers of PPP in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa include former federal minister Najamuddin Khan, who has been appointed provincial senior vice president, and former provincial minister Eng Mohammad Humayun Khan, who has been nominated general secretary.

Liaquat Shabab has been appointed secretary information of PPP in the province, Israr Nahqai deputy general secretary, Senator Rubeena Khalid adviser to the provincial president and Gohar Inqilabi has been appointed provincial deputy information secretary.

Fahim Khattak, the youngest office-bearer of PPP in the province, has been assigned three different duties. He will work as media coordinator to the provincial president of the party, provincial coordination secretary and secretary information of People’s Students Federation.

MPA Nighat Orakzai has already been appointed provincial president of the women wing of the party.

The party is yet to complete the process of nomination of provincial office-bearers as the seats of joint secretary, finance secretary and office secretary are still vacant.

Mr Khattak told Dawn that the remaining seats would be filled very soon. On the other hand some senior workers of the party have been demanding intra-party elections in the province. They have been holding meetings for the last about two months in Peshawar and Nowshera.

Sources said that they were planning to start their activities in other districts to strengthen the group, called ideological workers by them.

However, the party leadership has taken serious notice of the meetings and decided to issue show cause notices to some of them.

A well-placed source said that the show cause notices would be issued to former governor Barrister Masood Kausar, former speaker of provincial assembly Abdul Akbar Khan, former MNA Tariq Khattak and former federal minister Lal Mohammad Khan.

When asked, Mr Khattak said that everyone had to respect the party’s discipline. All those found violating the discipline would have to face action, he added.

However, Lal Khan said that majority of the workers were demanding intra-party elections and they were not ready to accept nomination of provincial office-bearers.

“We are in contact with PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and he knows well about the situation in our province. We also have the support of workers. We will prove that majority of them are opposed to nomination of the handpicked people,” he said.
