MIRPURKHAS, Dec 16: The team of the IRC, a private firm hired by the Sindh government, has failed to ascertain correct facts and figures about the water discharge into Nara and Rohri Canals as Sukkur Barrage authorities released equal share of water into both the canals during the checking, reliable sources told Dawn on Sunday.

Under the directives of the Sindh governor, a team of the International Research Consultants (IRC) comprising four superintending engineers and others was hired to check the water discharge into Nara and Rohri Canals to find out correct position of water discharge into both the canals.

The decision was made with a view to removing the grievances of the farmers of the command area of Nara Canal particularly a farmers organization regarding less supply of water to Nara Canal than Rohri Canal and recording of wrong data about the water discharge into Nara Canal.

Under the routine procedure, the engineers are bound to supply equal share of water to both the canals from Sukkur Barrage from available water.

Sources disclosed that few days before the water discharge checking by the IRC team, Sukkur Barrage authorities were instructed to correct the water discharge into both canals.

When the IRC team reached the site near Sukkur to check the water discharge, many people including journalists were present to see the process of the checking. The IRC team found water discharge of 6,000 cusecs each into both the Nara and Rohri Canals.

The vice president of Sindh Abadgar Board, Haji Abdul Ghafoor Mahar, general secretary, Imtiaz Panhwar, Syed Ali Gohar Shah and Rais Ahmed Khan have rejected the results of the exercise.

In a joint statement on Sunday they said that there was need of surprise checking.

SUGARCANE SUPPLY: Growers have stopped the supply of sugarcane to sugar mills in Mirpurkhas division following low rate offered by the mill owners to them.

The owners of Mirpurkhas Sugar Mill, Al-Abbas Sugar Mill, Digri Sugar mill, Tharparkar Sugar Mill and Sanghar Sugar Mill were offering the rate of Rs52 per maund to the growers in the beginning of the crushing season.

But recently they decreased the rate to Rs48 per maund as a result of which several growers have stopped harvesting their sugarcane crop and stopped the sugarcane supply to the mills which has led the crushing position of the mills to come to minimum level.

The growers are being offered a rate lesser than the fixed one by agents of the mills but they demand at least Rs55 per maund so that they can get reasonable price of their crop.

SECURITY: Security has been beefed up in different parts of the district and police personnel have been deployed at bazaars, roundabouts, and important buildings to avert any possible act of terrorism on the occasion of Eid.

Police in plain clothes have been deployed in business centre and markets of Mirpurkhas City and patrolling has been intensified in different town of the district.
