Bashir not wanted by US: FIA

LAHORE, July 12: The Federal Investigation Agency has no plan to extradite Malik Bashir, allegedly involved in human trafficking, to the US.

This was stated by FIA assistant director (immigration) Arif Bokhari while talking to Dawn here on Saturday.

Answering a question, he denied reports that some members of parliament were active to stop his extradition. “The US has not sought his extradition,” he said.

Malik Bashir, who was booked in 12 human trafficking cases in Karachi, in two cases in Islamabad and one in Lahore, was arrested from the Lahore High Court soon after his bail was cancelled late last month. He was also wanted in a murder case registered with the city police.

Reportedly, Malik Bashir had started human smuggling some 22 years ago and managed to send scores of people from different parts of the country abroad, especially Europe and USA.

Mr Bokhari said the agency did not have any evidence against Malik Bashir because he used to refund entire amount to those ‘customers’ whom he could not send abroad against fake documents.

He said Bashir was nominated in the first case in Lahore in March this year when the agency had arrested three people from the airport and recovered fake documents from their possession.

The accused had told the FIA that they had made a heavy payment to Bashir for arranging passports and visas for travel to Europe.

Mr Bokhari claimed that Bashir had a property of over Rs250 million in Lahore only.
