HYDERABAD, July 10: Lawyers in Sindh, on the call of the Pakistan Bar Council, observed a protest day on Thursday against the sealing of Supreme Court Bar Association offices in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi.

In Hyderabad, members of the High Court Bar Association, district chapter, hoisted a black flag at the Bar room and wore black arm bands.

The HCBA, Hyderabad, also held a protest meeting, which was presided over by its president, Hakim Ali Siddiqui.

The meeting unanimously adopted a resolution, upholding the independence of the Bar.

Criticizing the apex court authorities for sealing offices, libraries and Bar rooms of the SCBA, the resolution said interference in the Bar association affairs would affect the working of the judicial system in the country.

It observed that this action was against the independence of the judiciary. It said the lawyers’ struggle against the Legal Framework Order was not motivated by any self interest but was for restoration of supremacy of the Constitution and sovereignty of the people.

The meeting also condemned the Quetta carnage and called it a failure of law enforcement agencies.

LARKANA: Lawyers affiliated with the High Court Bar Association, Larkana, observed a protest day here on Thursday against the sealing of offices and libraries of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

The lawyers held a meeting at the Bar room that adopted two resolutions.

The Bar association expressed its dismay over the closure of the offices, saying it would hamper duties of lawyers at registries.

It urged the Supreme Court to restore the offices to make it possible for advocates to discharge their duties.

In another resolution, the association condemned the recent attack on an imambargah in Quetta in which 54 people were killed. It slammed the Balochistan government for failing to provide protection to people.

SUKKUR: A protest day was also observed by members of high court and district Bar associations of Sukkur in response to the call given by the Pakistan Bar Council and the Sindh Bar Council.

The lawyers also held a protest meeting at the High Court Bar Room.

THATTA: On the call of the Pakistan Bar Council, lawyers of the district observed a strike and boycotted court proceedings here on Thursday to protest against the closure of Supreme Court Bar Association offices.

The lawyers termed the action illegal and an attack on the freedom of speech.
