MINGORA: A man blew himself up in the clinic of a village defence committee volunteer in Charbagh tehsil of Swat on Wednesday.

According to DSP Yousaf Ali, a constable of special police and an army soldier, who were on routine patrol in the area, followed the man on suspicion to the clinic of Dr Farooq, on the first floor of a building in Yakha Cheena area, and tried to overpower him.

They scuffled with the bomber, who was about 27 years old, but when he tried to detonate explosives strapped to his body, the security personnel jumped down from the stairs to save their lives, while the man blew himself up, DSP Ali told reporters.

The man was carrying 5kg of explosives, he said.

According to sources, an accomplice of the bomber fled the scene after the explosion.

Security personnel cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to arrest the fleeing suspect.
