Salim Malik seeks life ban review

LAHORE: Pakistan's cricket authorities have promised to review the life ban imposed in 2000 on former Test captain Salim Malik for match-fixing, an official said Wednesday.

The 51-year-old Malik met Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi to seek to overturn the sanction.

Malik was banned for life in May 2000 after an inquiry commission found him guilty of offering bribes to Australian cricketers Shane Warne, Tim May and Mark Waugh to under-perform in matches during Australia's tour of Pakistan in 1994.

Malik's name also featured in separate inquiries which resulted in life bans on Mohammad Azharuddin of India and Hansie Cronje of South Africa.

“Malik met with chairman PCB who heard his case and promised a review but we haven't assured anything,” said PCB spokesman Amjad Hussain.

Malik told reporters he wanted the PCB to take the matter to the International Cricket Council, and said he was hopeful of a positive outcome.

“The ban has hurt my life badly and I want to live a normal life, want to help my players,” Malik said.

“I am sure the PCB will help me in this matter and chairman has assured me of complete cooperation and I have also offered my services to Pakistan cricket.”

Malik was one of the leading Pakistan batsmen of his day. He led Pakistan between 1993-1995 and played 103 Tests and 283 one-day internationals before the ban.

Only in Pakistan. If he comes back with his ban lifted and has anything to do with Cricket, watch us go down the toilet. We do not need any corrupt ex-cricketer, or any tableegi cricketer at any level of Pakistan cricket. It will destroy us completely. Let me end and say again "only in Pakistan"

I believe in forgiveness once a person has realized his mistake and has truly felt the punishment. I think Malik needs to be forgiven now that he has suffered a 14 years ban. He should be used by PCB and ICC to spread awareness regarding the ills of fixing.

Why only Pakistan

Sir, The players who had accused Pakistan were no angels themselves. Shane Warne was banned and withdrawn from the world cup for taking banned substance thereafter whereas scores of other international cricketers had admitted providing the weather information, pitch report, batting order to bookies during a tour of India. Moreover, when the Indian cricket board had pardoned Mohamed Azharuddin who is now contesting elections then why not pardon Salim Malik as well and let him earn his living honourably. The International cricket council should stop behaving like Indian cricket council and must bring in accountability and fairness on board rather than punishing the players from Pakistan only whereas suspicious cricketers such a MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina gets a free hand in the Indian Premier League. No way u should be given a chance to come back because you did a crime at a matured age; only Amir can get the benefit of being young. Are u going to return back the money to PCB or Edhi Foundation? And what about the bad image you created for your country. No more tainted players should be allowed to mingle up with the new players.
