LAHORE: The Children Reconstructive Surgeries and Research Centre of Shalamar Hospital will send seven children to the US for complicated surgical treatments.

Shalamar Hospital Director Hashmat Effendi told reporters on Tuesday the children would undergo medical procedures for cleft lip pallet, burn and congenital deformities in the US.

“Now we are sending seven children to USA for complicated surgeries,” she said, adding that these children would be treated under a memorandum of understanding signed between the Shalamar Hospital and the House of Charity, USA.

She said more than 60 successful surgeries of the children with cleft lip pallet, burns and other birth abnormalities had been performed at the centre in the last one month.

A child with a cleft lip/palate should be treated between the ages three months and one year, she said. The child could face speech and feedingproblems if not treatedon time.

A cleft lip/palate might also affect a child's self-esteem, social skills and behavior, she added.

Earlier, Dr Effendi delivered presentation on ‘Care of acute neurosurgical trauma’ and ‘Care of acute facial trauma’.
