KARACHI: The second phase of trials to select Pakistan’s sharp shooters for this year’s Asian Games and Commonwealth Games will be held at the Naval International Shooting Range here on May 10, National Rifle Association of Pakistan (NRAP) announced on Thursday.

“Trials will be conducted in all events including Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun,” Executive Vice President NRAP Razi Ahmed Khan told newsmen here. The NRAP official said Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) have allocated a quota of seven players for the Commonwealth and Asian Games but NRAP was making efforts to increase the number of entries.

After the second round of trials prospective shooters will be short-listed and will undergo third and final round in June before the finalization of the squad.

Razi observed that Pakistan shooters have performed well in the Commonwealth Games and showed improvement in Asian Games.

Commenting on the selection criteria, Razi said shooters accumulating best scores in their respective events will be selected for the continental and global sporting extravaganza.

He maintained that Pakistan has a fairly good track record in the Commonwealth Games as they won bronze medals in Melbourne and Glasgow.

The forthcoming XX Commonwealth Games will be staged in Glasgow from July 23 to August 3 while XVII Asian Games will be held at South Korean city of Incheon from Sept 19 to Oct 4.

Razi said in the meantime six boys and girls have qualified to represent Pakistan in the second Youth Olympics being held in Nanjing (China) from August 16-28. He added that one among the selected players will get the wild-card entry for the Youth Olympics.

In the meantime training camp of the shooters was in progress at Naval Shooting Range. Twenty eight sharp shooters in different events have been receiving coaching from Razi who is an International Sports Shooting Federation (ISSF) lisenced official .
