GWADAR: Several houses and a school building have been washed away by erosion caused by the sea in Peshkan, a small coastal town in Gwadar district, local people said.

The erosion started two years ago and its intensity has been increasing since, posing a threat to the town itself. Local fishermen say erosion becomes more dangerous in summer.

They alleged that the slow pace of work on a jetty in Peshkan had caused erosion which had swallowed up a big portion of the building of a government school and several houses.

The jetty is under construction for seven years. The fishermen accused the authorities and the contractor of delaying the construction work deliberately.

They also said the construction of a road in Peshkan could also not be completed during the past seven years because of negligence of the authorities and the contractor company.

The fishermen urged Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch to construct an embankment around the Peshkan town.
