LAHORE, July 4: Dacoits shot dead a cab driver on resistance in Muslim Town on Friday.
Javed Ahmad told police that three gunmen had stormed into his furniture showroom and snatched Rs30,000 and two cell phones from him and a friend of his.
He said the gangsters left his shop, held a rickshaw driver hostage at gun-point and got into it. A cab-driver, Nadeemullah Khan, aged 28, witnessed the scene, chased the rickshaw and attempted to intercept it.
The robbers opened fire on him and escaped. He sustained critical injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.
The body was taken to the city mortuary for an autopsy. A case was registered with no arrest.
GANG BUSTED: Police claim to have arrested nine members of two “gangs of robbers”.
The ringleader of the first gang was identified as Sohail alias Sohaila after being caught on a tip-off from Shadbagh. He informed on his accomplices, Javed alias Maulvi, Ali, Nadeem and Hafeez, who were arrested as well.
The gang is alleged to have killed three people on resistance and injured several others in Lahore and nearby cities over the last few months.
Four pistols, a rifle, 24 bullets, a stolen motorcycle and Rs20,000 in cash were said to have been recovered from the arrested men. The police claimed the gang members had so far confessed to their involvement in 21 crimes against property.
Four “gangsters”, Hamayun alias Ali, Saleem alias Acho, Younus Khan and Waseem, were taken into custody by the police in three raids carried out on tip-offs in different parts of the city.
They confessed to their involvement in six crimes against property, which also included the one in which a businessman was robbed of cash, gold and valuables worth Rs10 million in Faisal Town a few weeks ago.
Three pistols, a revolver, 19 bullets, Rs600,000 in cash and gold jewellery worth around Rs400,000 have so far been recovered from the alleged robbers. — Our Reporter
