NAWABSHAH, July 3: Several dozen growers of Jheemal minor, Nusrat irrigation division, staged a sit-in and observed a token hunger strike on Thursday outside local press club against water shortage.
Speaking on the occasion Abdul Sattar Rind, Khan Mohammad Khokhar and Mohammad Juman said they had observed a token hunger strike a week ago and were assured the provision of water by Ghulam Nabi Mughal, superintending engineer irrigation, Rohri circle.
They said the department had failed to provide water and compelled us to resume the protest. They alleged that the executive engineer and other officials of the Nusrat irrigation division were selling water to influential landlords.
They demanded legal action against the officials and warned to continue their protest till the provision of water.
ELEVEN BOOKED: Cases were registered against eleven growers on Wednesday for stealing irrigation water.
They were booked under section 61/62 of the Irrigation Act and identified as Mohammad Hassan Unnar, Sobdar, Mitho Zardari, Shabbir Zardari, Muqeem Zardari, Qadir, Bachal Unnar, Haider Dahri, Sukhio Saleem, and Ghulam Mustafa.
The SDO irrigation alleged that the growers were stealing water.
PROTEST: At least 60 employees of the population welfare department protested against the population welfare officer (PWO) here on Thursday. Led by Mohammad Luqman Bughio, vice president, the All Pakistan Clerks Association (Sindh chapter) and Fouzia Bhatti of APCA (ladies wing), they alleged that the PWO mistreated the staff, especially women.
