KARACHI: The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) on Monday were cruelly denied qualifying for the final of the Patron’s Trophy (Grade-II) cricket tournament when heavy rain in Mirpur washed out the third and final day which saw the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) through to the March 27-30 title-decider.

Requiring another 74 runs on Monday after having reached 39-1 on Sunday evening while chasing a modest 113, the KPT were left to rue their sheer bad luck. On the other hand, the SSGC celebrated their qualification on the basis of their 32-run lead on the first innings.

SSGC’s opponents in the final at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad will be the Capital Development Authority (CDA) who qualified on a better run-rate after their semi-final against Sayid Paper Mills (SPM) was also badly disrupted by rain at the LCCA Ground in Lahore.

The CDA were due to resume their first innings at 96-4 in reply to SPM’s 271 but because of the washout, the former went through on run-rate of 4.00 against 3.91 obtained by SPM.

Sunday’s second day was restricted to just 11 overs in this game.

The winners of the competition will play first-class cricket in the President’s Trophy next season.

Scores and results on Monday (final day of three):

At Mirpur Cricket Stadium, Mirpur: Match drawn – no play on day three.
