HYDERABAD, June 30: The proposals of granting discretionary grants and secret funds of the district Nazim and the DCO, presented in the 2003-2004 budget of the Hyderabad district government, were withdrawn on Monday.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the budget proposals committee of the district council, held here at the office of District Naib Nazim Nawab Rashid Ali Khan.

According to a participant of the meeting, the Rs10 million fund of the DCO would now be utilized for construction of a conference room, library and recreational resort, increase in travelling allowances of district council members and enhancement in entertainment allocations.

He said discretionary grants of Rs5 million of the district Nazim would be utilized under different heads and secret fund of Rs5 million of the Nazim would be utilized in the head of emergency, i.e. floods, rains, fire and terrorist activities.

The meeting said development funds would be utilized equally in 102 union councils of the district.

It decided that each union council would be given Rs600,000 from the funds of the defunct district council.

The budget proposals committee, consisting of two members each from eight talukas of the district, was formed during the budget session by the convener of the council.

INQUIRY DEMANDED: The union council-15 of the Hyderabad City taluka has adopted a resolution, demanding an investigation into ransacking of the UC office and extending of threats to its Nazim, Naib Nazim and councillors.

The resolution was released to the press with details of the incident on Saturday.

According to the proceedings of the meeting held on June 26, a man, Naeem, who claimed to be the in charge of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s unit-29, Latifabad Taluka, with others entered the union council when it was discussing the budget.

Furious over the suspension of water supply to their areas, Naeem, reportedly a gardener of the City taluka, and his friends abused the Nazim, Naib Nazim and councillors and extended threats to them.

Naib Nazim Zulfiqar Ali Baloch and the councillors tried to explain their position but the intruders went on damaging furniture and documents of the union council.

Through its resolution, the union council demanded that District Nazim Dr Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman, the district coordination officer and the DPO should order an impartial investigation into the incident and award punishment to the attackers.
