THATTA, June 28: Opposition leader in Sindh Assembly Nisar Ahmed Khuhro has said that democracy tailored by Gen Pervez Musharraf is depriving the masses of their basic rights.

He was addressing workers’ convention at the Sarki House Makli on Friday night. Those others addressed the occasion included Rashid Rabbani, Munawar Soharwardi, Shah Mohammad Shah, N.D. Khan, MPAs Sassui Palejo, Humera Alwani, Babu Ghulam Hussain, Ghulam Ali Khwaja, Dr Wahid Soomro, Manzoor Sarki and Arbab Wazir.

The leaders underlined the need to expedite struggle to pave the way for return of the party leader Benazir Bhutto to her motherland.

They said unilateral amendments and changes made in the 1973 Constitution was a mockery of democracy in the country. Mr Khuhro said it was the prerogative of parliament to do the legislation but the uniformed president has crippled the state mechanism through his autocratic orders.

The institutions were being weakened, rights of provinces usurped, and intentionally an atmosphere of hatred and division amongst the two provinces has been created on the issue of water, the rulers were pursuing their personal agenda of a divide and rule.

He contended the government was ineligible in running the state affairs and instead of realizing the voice of people feeling shy.

Raza Rabbani said politics of victimization and atrocities against opponents had compelled the unemployed to commit suicide. He said the economic situation was becoming worst with every passing day, which would ultimately destabilise the country geographically, socially and politically.

Dr Karim Khwaja provincial head of the People’s Doctors Form said Pakistan was passing through its most crucial political period and the time was appropriate to wage a war against the dictators and evolve an atmosphere of unconditional unity among the rank and file of the party to streamline the true democracy in the country under the leadership of Benazir Bhutto.

MPAs Humera Alwani, Sassui Palejo, Imtiaz Qureshi, Ismail Palejo, Iqbal Shah and Ghulam Qadir Palejo also spoke on the occasion.
