GUJRAT: A literary sitting was organised with renowned scholar Dr Saulat Nagi, currently residing in Australia, by Hayatian Literary Society, University of Gujrat (UoG) in which Dr Nagi delivered a comprehensive lecture on “Influence of Freud and Marx on literature.”

Dr Nagi has authored seven books on different topics in English and Urdu. His area of interest extends to the study of capitalism, religion, psychology, ethics, literature and criticism.

Talking about literature and consumerism, Dr Nagi said Sigmund Freud and Karl Marx were two giants of the modern thought and they had a great impact on our existing literature and ideology. Both the scholars had helped shape the modern world through their revolutionary ideas.

He introduced the students with some terminology used by both the scholars before commencing his lecture so that students could comprehend the purport of the lecture easily.

Talking about the impact of language on society, Dr Nagi said: “Language represents dominant and powerful class of society. Sometimes language becomes a tool in the hands of this powerful class of society for exploitation of the oppressed. The dominant class rules the society through language.”

MUSHAIRA: A Mehfil-i-Mushaira was held on Thursday at Hafiz Hayat Campus of the University of Gujrat.

The event was organised by Qalamkar Creative Writing Forum in collaboration with Students Services Centre.

Celebrated poet Anwar Masood presided over the mushaira and UoG Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin was the chief guest.

This mushaira was dedicated to poet Mehboob-i-Khazan who passed away recently.

The participating poets included Abbas Tabish, Shaheen Abbas, Idrees Babar, Shahid Zaki, Dr Farhat Abbas, Zahid Saeed, Syed Ansar Abbas, Shahzad Nayyar, Ali Zaryun, Rehman Faris, Mudassar Azeem, Shahzad Mirza Ahmad Ata, Amin Haider, Zahid Bashir and Adeel Qamar.

Rana Ahmad Shaheed, Rana Amir Liaquat and Naeemullah Anmol were the representative poets of the university.

Prof Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin said, “Poetry helps groom personality and provides new modes of expression and different aspects of style. Mushairas are an essential part of our intellectual, literary and cultural tradition.”

Anwar Masood said: “This mushaira held in UoG is unforgettable for me because of its grandeur. I am feeling great pleasure by observing the intellectual and poetic fervour of students. Gujrat is my home and my best memories are related with Gujrat. I wish students success in their practical life.”
