KABUL: A blast killed two police officers in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday while three Danish soldiers were injured when their car was hit by an explosive-laden vehicle in the southern part of the country, officials said.

Provincial spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai said a suicide car bomber targeted a police and intelligence compound in eastern Nangarhar province's Pachir Wagam district. In an e-mailed statement, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which also wounded three members of the Afghan security forces.

Also on Thursday, a would-be suicide bomber was shot by officers in Nangarhar province as he tried to attack the home of a member of Afghanistan's parliament in the city of Jalalabad, police said.

Provincial spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashraqiwal said the bomber's suicide vest detonated when he was shot. Only the bomber was killed.

Separately, three Danish soldiers were injured in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province when their car was hit by an improvised explosive device placed in another vehicle.

The Danish army said the soldiers were airlifted by a helicopter to a nearby field hospital after Thursday's blast.

The army did not say how seriously the soldiers were injured, but said that they had been able to call the relatives.

More than 40 Danish soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the Scandinavian country began contributing soldiers to the Nato force.

Denmark's military force is gradually pulling out of combat operations, planning to leave 300 soldiers to train Afghan forces.

Insurgents in Afghanistan have intensified attacks recently in a campaign to regain territory as foreign forces prepare to leave the country at the end of 2014.

One wonders what the rationale was for the foreign minister — a highly demanding, full-time job — being assigned various other political responsibilities.
