KARACHI: Last year’s losing finalists Habib Bank shocked holders Wapda 3-0 in the final to regain women’s team event title in the Golden Jubilee Panasonic National Table Tennis Championships at Islamia Club’s Majeed Khan Gymnasium on Friday evening.

The triumph reminded the golden Shakoor sisters era when the bank team ruled the domestic circuit of the game for well over a decade.

Two-time former national champion Rahila Kashif gave her team a sound start by getting the better of Pakistan No 2 Ayesha Iqbal in the fully stretched battle 4-11, 12-10, 11-6, 5-11, 11-5.

Shabnam Bilal, who had won national crown four times in the past, sent international Loiza Irshad packing 11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7 to consolidate team’s position.

Maliha Khursheed, a former national junior champion, completed the rout by having a short work of Saida Falak Sher 11-3, 11-3, 11-4 to win the best of five final straight.

The men’s team event final between Wapda and Sindh ‘A’ will be played on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Pakistan No 1 Asim Qureshi of Wapda and Ayesha Iqbal, also of Wapda, have been seeded on top in the men’s and women’s singles which commenced on Friday.
