NEW DELHI, June 17: Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Tuesday said Pakistan had lost three wars against India and would be “defeated” if there were another.

His comments came after President Pervez Musharraf last week in an interview with India TV channel did not rule out another military conflict with India — similar to that in 1999 on the icy heights of Kargil — if their dispute over Kashmir is not resolved.

New Delhi had said it was “deeply disappointed” over the statement, but Musharraf later said he was quoted out of context.

“Musharraf has reminded us of Kargil but he should remember Pakistan was defeated three times in wars and was now preparing for a fourth defeat,” Vajpayee told a rally in Mandla district of northern Madhya Pradesh state, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.—AFP
