PESHAWAR, June 14: City district council has taken a strong notice of continuing killings of its union council Nazims at the hands of their rivals in the district.

The council which held its special session here on Saturday demanded of the NWFP government to ensure security of peoples’ representatives and arrest killers of Nazim Tehseenullah who was shot dead on June 8. Convener Dr Iqbal Khalil presided over the proceedings.

The district council members said four Nazims had been killed during the last nine months in Peshawar district, but the police had not been able to arrest a single assassin. They said the district government and the provincial government should adopt measures for the security of Nazims.

On the occasion the city district Nazim Azam Afridi said the police had been directed to properly investigate murder case of Nazim Hassan Garhi-I union council Tehseenullah and three other Nazims. He said the district government could not ignore its responsibilities and killers would be brought to justice.

Mr Afridi announced that district government would establish special funds to compensate the dependents of the late Nazims. The council offered Fateha for the departed soul and expressed sympathies with the bereaved family.

INQUIRY: A special committee of the NWFP assembly here on Saturday adjourned proceedings against Nazim Bannu district Malik Iqbal till July 3.

The committee chairman Khalid Waqar Chamkani said that the Nazim who was facing corruption charges appeared before the committee and sought more time to defend himself.

He said Mr Iqbal informed the committee that due to President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s Kohat visit and the chief minister Akram Durrani visit to Bannu district, he could not find time to prepare his case.

The committee directed the Nazim to appear before  the committee on July 3. The NWFP government had accused the Nazims of Bannu and Kohistan of embezzlement in development funds and tabled motions in the provincial assembly against both of them.

President Gen Musharraf had asked the provincial government to conduct inquiry against district Nazims through an independent commission.
