South Africa secure narrow win over Pakistan after rain

JOHANNESBURG: Rain ended an intriguing chase from Pakistan and handed South Africa a four-run victory via the Duckworth/Lewis scoring system in the first Twenty20 international in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Quinton de Kock top-scored with 43 as South Africa posted 153 for seven in their 20 overs having been put into bat by Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez at the Wanderers.

The visitors had reached 60 for two in 9.1 overs when the heavens opened and ended the game with the sub-continent side needing a further 94 to win from 65 balls.

The second and final Twenty20 international will be played in Cape Town on Friday.

Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez (captain), Nasir Jamshed, Ahmed Shehzad, Sohaib Maqsood, Umar Amin, Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Sohail Tanvir, Bilawal Bhatti, Junaid Khan, Anwar Ali.

South Africa: Faf du Plessis (captain), Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, Henry Davids, JP Duminy, David Miller, Wayne Parnell, Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Imran Tahir.

I can't understand why Misbah and Saeed Ajmal were not included in the playing X1. It appears that Hafeez/Afridi/Moin Khan are determined to destroy the team! Dirty politics not surprising in a Country like Pakistan.

I cannot really blame Pakistan for losing this game as result was based on D&L. I was surprised though that they was no visible indication from management regarding a plan in case it does rain which was very likely. We fell 4 runs short. The more and more I see Pakistan I have realized some important changes need to be made. All the Akmals, Hafeez and Afridi need to be asked to leave the team permanently. They are not performers and are committed enough to play for Pakistan. We need to groom a captain for ODI, Test and T-20. I would say for Test probably Asad Shafiq. For T-20 and ODI, we need Ahmed Shazad. Misbah has done well but the maximum he can lead for is another year so we need to groom someone else.

When will Team Pakistan secure the so called narrow win against SA. Win or loss is a part of any game but continuously loosing points towards a big question mark more on the performance of the management than on the playing members.

Unfortunate... could have been a good match. However, shouldn't Pakistan team have made an effort to stay ahead of D/L score at all time - D/L requirement was being shown on the scoreboard every over. Hope Anwar Ali is dropped and replaced by Ajmal in the second T20 tomorrow.

No hard feeling, Pakistan played much better cricket and showed very good attitude, Bilawal was very impressive, he seems to be a very talented player, at least wit the bowl, as he bowled very briskly, not seen his batting, well some other time he will certainly show his talent with the bat, anwar ali not very impressive but it is early days, Nasir Jamshed has lost all the touch and it seems that he does play with full flowing of his bat, pls do something with sohail tanvir he should be kept in pakistan rather in pakistan team. All the best for the next match, keep up the good show

no excuse for ignorance. Hafeez should have kept an eye on the score board and the D/L par score. I dont know why he was over smiling?

I am surprised that Misbah and Ajmal were not included in the playing eleven! It appears to be dirty politics by the trio of Moin/ Afridi and Hafeez

Even Ms. luck is not on their side. This is indeed a very hard time for the green-shirts. In fact, it is just the beginning of yet another series of horrible and shameful defeats for Hafeez as well as Misbah-ul-Haq and party against South Africa.

This is the problem with all pakistani fans. Keep complaining !! Pls look at the records of all the old horses in the pakistani team. Mishbah is the top pakistani batsman in ODI and ranked No. 9. Hafeez is No. 1 ODI all rounder and No.2 Twenty20 all rounder. Afridi is No.7 ODI all rounder and No. 5 Twenty20 all rounder. These so called old horses are the ones who are really giving some semblance of international quality to the Pakistani team. Where are the so called youngsters ? where is their performance ? stop complaining and support your heroes like India supportd Sachin and its other cricketing heroes.
