HYDERABAD, June 7: Teachers observed a protest day here on Saturday against attack on and arrest of protesting teachers in Islamabad.

Leaders of the All Sindh Teachers Association (ASTA) and its affiliated associations staged a token hunger strike outside the press club to condemn violence against protesting teachers.

Speaking on the occasion, ASTA office-bearers Ismail Laghari, Qazi Aminuddin, Imdad Ali Gopang and others leashed out at the government for using force against teachers.

They demanded immediate release of the arrested teachers and removal of the federal finance minister. They also demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident and punishment to government functionaries who had used force against the teachers.

They warned that teachers would stage protest demonstrations outside provincial assemblies during budget sessions if the arrested teachers were not released and their demands were not accepted.

SPLA: The Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association at a meeting held at the Government Sachal Sarmast Arts and Commerce College here on Friday demanded that the transfer order of Sindh Chief Secretary K. B. Rind should be cancelled.

The meeting adopted several resolutions, demanding that the budgetary allocation for the education sector should be fixed at six per cent of the GDP, salaries and allowances of teachers be raised by 50 per cent.
