Rs120m tax-free budget approved

GUJRANWALA, June 5: The Saddar tehsil council gave an approval for the tax-free annual budget of Rs120 million for the fiscal year 2003-04 at a meeting here on Thursday.

The meeting was presided over by Naib Nazim Sardar Inamul Haq while Nazim Mubasher Ahmad Cheema presented the budget.

The Nazim said that the income would chiefly be generated through the transfer of property and cattle market.

Giving details, he said that Rs10.5 million income was expected from the property transfer, Rs9.5 million from the cattle market and Rs30.4 million from the octroi grant. He said that at least Rs110.6 million expenditures had been estimated.

The Saddar tehsil council had proposed to impose cleanliness and sewerage taxes, but the idea was dropped on the recommendation of budget sub-committee members to provide relief to the people, he added.

MURDERED: Two persons were shot dead and another beheaded in various parts of the district on Thursday.

Reports said Muhammad Hanif acquired a piece of land from landlord Muhammad Akbar, a resident of Gondlanwala village, on lease. He was at Akbar’s outhouse on Thursday when the latter’s rivals opened an indiscriminate fire on them. Hanif died instantly.

Muhammad Sadiq was shot dead by robbers at Macheranwala village, Ferozewala.

His heirs said some armed men entered the house and started plundering cash and valuables. They opened fire on Sadiq when he put up resistance, killing him within minutes.

Police are investigating.

Meanwhile, Aroop police claimed to have recovered a beheaded body of a young man near Nandipur, and sent it to the DHQ hospital for identification.

obscenity: The district administration on Thursday removed a number of hoardings and film posters here during an anti-obscenity campaign.

DIG police Malik Muhammad Iqbal has also warned cinema owners and theatre artists to avoid picturising obscene shows, otherwise action would be taken against them.

The government higher-ups held a meeting after a circus was set on fire by the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal activists a few days ago. They decided to remove the obscene hoardings and posters from the district.

Meanwhile, the MMA leaders have demanded withdrawal of case against MNA Qazi Hamidullah and 200 other activists.

INTENSE HEAT: Increasing temperatures kept people indoors here on Thursday.

Attendance in most of the schools and colleges remained thin.

The parents of the school-going children have demanded the private schools’ authorities that they should announce summer vacation schedule without delay.
