KARACHI: Election plea

Published June 6, 2003

KARACHI, June 5: A division bench of the Sindh High Court asked an election tribunal on Thursday to decide a petition in respect of the last poll in the National Assembly constituency NA-255 before the ensuing byelections.

A writ petition was moved by MMA candidate Aslam Mujahid, stating that his petition against the election of (the late) Mahmood Ahmed Qureshi of the MQM (H) alleging serious illegalities and irregularities was pending before the election tribunal, comprising Justice Moosa K. Leghari. His counsel Junaid Farooqui was pressing for its acceptance when MNA Qureshi expired.

A division bench, consisting of Justices Sabihuddin Ahmed and S. Ali Aslam Jafri, observed that a byelection was not possible until adjudication of the validity of the last poll and directed the tribunal to announce its decision by June 23. — Staff Reporter
