KARACHI, June 5: The city government is studying proposals pertaining to a system for solid waste management on scientific lines.

This was stated by City Nazim Naimatullah Khan while addressing a seminar on Environmental Conservation and Rehabilitation held under the aegis of the city government here Thursday in connection with the World Environment Day.

Mr Khan said that a process would also be introduced gradually to make productive application of solid waste generated in the city. In this regard, he expressed his inability to comprehend logic behind the existing system of collecting and disposing of solid waste generated in city to a landfill site 40 miles from the city and costing no less than one billion rupees annually to the city government.

The Nazim, acknowledging that the city was exposed to a high level of environmental pollution and deteriorating environmental standards, reiterated his commitment to initiate modifications in the existing system and reminded that the mess created over years could not be rectified in few months or a year.

Naimatullah Khan regretted that the public at large had contributed to the negative affects on the balance created by Nature. This is something linked to the negative approach of the human being towards nature.—APP
