LAHORE, Oct 21: The Punjab government has approached the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for holding the local body polls in the province on Dec 7.

The provincial government sent on Monday a written request to the ECP for holding the local body polls, Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan told the media.

He said Punjab had not only completed its legislative work for reviving the local government system but also given a final date for holding elections for making operational the local governments.

Referring to opposition’s objections to delimitations and holding the electoral exercise on non-party basis, the law minister said the opposition party in Punjab was ruling the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province where its government failed to even accomplish the task of enacting the local body law despite claiming to hold polls there within six months.
