KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) member of the National Assembly Abdul Rashid Godil and Information Minister Sharjeel Memon’s victories in NA-252 and PS-50 constituencies were challenged in an Election Tribunal in Karachi on Monday, DawnNews reported.

Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) leader Ali Hasan Zaidi challenged the election of Godil to the NA-252 constituency in the election tribunal. Zaidi accused him of fake balloting and of holding the polling agent hostage.

The election tribunal issued notices to the Election Commission of Pakistan, Rashid Godil and other concerned parties for October 29.

Meanwhile, independent candidate Khawand Baksh challenged Sharjeel Memon’s victory in Sindh Assembly's PS-50 constituency. Baksh also alleged that Memon had resorted to fake balloting. The tribunal has summoned both the parties on November 7.

Earlier in October, the election tribunal in Karachi had also directed Farooq Sattar, a member of the National Assembly and central leader of the MQM, and other respondents to file their replies in an election petition against the election of the MQM leader to the NA-249 constituency.

The petition challenging the election results was filed by the runner-up candidate in the constituency, Abdul Aziz Memon of the Pakistan Peoples Party, alleging massive rigging at certain polling stations in the constituency.

The tribunal, headed by former judge of the Sindh High Court Zafar Ahmed Sherwani, put off the hearing to Oct 24.

Dr Sattar had bagged 109,952 votes and Mr Memon 64,974.

The petitioner alleged that polls were massively rigged in the constituency and asked the court to declare the NA-249 election results void.
